In the fast-paced, technology-driven world, it’s all too easy to get caught up in distractions that hinder our progress towards our goals and ambitions.

Finding ourselves endlessly feeling guilty as we succumb to the consumption of social media, neglecting productivity and taking action.

Even when we do start to prepare to focus and start working, we find ways to distract ourselves even further hindering our concentration.

It can seem as if our threshold to maintain focus is beyond our capacity, making it challenging to regain concentration after each disruptive distraction.

Whether it’s a friend’s notification or a software update on our phones.

To counteract these distractions that prevent us from concentrating and reaching our potential, we can turn to reading.

The engagement of our thoughts and ideas without dividing our attention can be enriching to the mind as it can inspire captivating ideas to propel us to take action.

It can create something magical, much like the spark ignited when two rocks collide.

So, let us dive into what we can do to make this happen and the lessons reading has in store for us.

Intentional setting

Setting the intention of reading with concentration enables us to train our focus for extended periods.

Whenever we are required to spend a couple of hours working on that essay, school project or homework, we can trigger that instinctive habit through reading to help us achieve our goals.

While you are reading and have that feeling that you are losing focus.

Try to be intentional by directing your focus on reading.

Sometimes you may continue to read but not understand what you are reading. During this time, it’s better to either read slowly or reflect on what you have read so far.

If focusing for long periods proves challenging, we can begin with shorter reading sessions and gradually build up over time.

This process strengthens our ability to process and comprehend information make connections with our prior knowledge to form new perspective.

Visualize your goals

The ability to maintain focus for an extended amount of time demonstrated a determination to achieve your goals, no matter what the obstacles that are in your way.

This mindset can transfer to other elements of your life including personal development, fitness or health pursuits.

To give yourself a goal and do the necessary actions required to achieve those goals shows that you are willing to put the work in to achieve your goals no matter how large your goals are.

Even from the observations of ants, we can see their ambition to attempt to carry objects such as large pieces of food and their unwavering focus on accomplishing their objectives.

Increases your vocabulary

Reading exposes you to different words that you may have never encountered before or have only briefly encountered them in the past.

The expansion of your vocabulary enables you to express yourself more precisely, preventing miscommunication and enhancing your ability to understand information.

Strategies to start reading

Building the systems in your routine can be an optimum way to ensure that you are doing the task at a convenient time and efficient manner.

  • Building a reading routine by creating a schedule — decide what time you want to read
  • Choose a location that is less likely going to distract you and remove any devices that are going to disturb you.
  • joining a reading club — can be a great way to hold accountability for maintaining a habit and develops your critical thinking skill.
  • Having a reading list which can keep you organized and motivated when you get any book recommendations for future reference.

Final thoughts

The overflowing distraction in our life, where our attention is constantly pulled in different directions, the art of reading stands as a beacon of focus and contemplation.

It empowers us to develop our concentration, achieve our goals and allows us to think.

Utilizing reading can be a away to take steps to improve your concentration to navigate away from the distractions of our modern world and to unlock your full potential.
