Meta’s New Twitter Rival, ‘Threads’, Will Twitter Fall?
Meta’s new app has been launched in certain countries called Threads, which is a Twitter alternative or a Twitter ‘clone’.
Social media platforms especially Instagram have this common theme of implementing features from other platforms and incorporating them into their own.
Such Instagram reels were inspired by the success of TikTok.
Or Instagram stories were a clone of the introduction of stories from Snapchat.
This has the advantage of transferring users from platforms like Snapchat and TikTok to Instagram due to more features available and more people using it.
Could this be replicated with Threads?
How did we get Here?
Meta chief product officer Chris Cox mentioned that the coding for The Threads app started in January, which was called then ‘Project 92’.
Mark Zuckerberg mentioned in Lex Fridman Podcast that Twitter hasn’t reached the potential that it could have achieved like reaching 1 billion users on the platform.
The intention of the app seems to replicate that idea onto a text-based platform similar to Twitter to prompt discussion, conversations and communication.
With the tweet of Meta discussing the potential competitor of Twitter, a response from Elon Musk responded: “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol.”
This has sparked a potential cage fight between the two Billionaires accompanied by the battle of social media.
With Elon Musk’s current ownership of Twitter, the direction it is taking is uncertain and unpredictable.
Making decisions that have received backlash such as having a temporary viewing limit for the number of tweets in a day.
This has given the sense of other companies wanting to take advantage of Twitter’s struggle.
Including the likes of Bluesky, Mastodon, Spill and T2 Social.
With a large number of users on Twitter, they might feel irritated with its current state and desire a breath of fresh air for an alternative.
Threads feel to come in just at the perfect moment to thrive as a direct competitor to Twitter.
The combination of the attention drawn from the potential fight between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg alongside the errors of Elon Musk, it couldn’t have almost been any better to get it released.
It is very similar to Twitter(almost identical), with it having no limitations to the number of posts you can view, it being free and linked to your Instagram.
This merging with Instagram can make it easier for people to use it, keep their current user name on Instagram and have that large built-in user base.
At this time of currently writing this, Zuckerberg mentions that the current sign-up right now is 30 million on Threads.
Threads have a currently increase user base that is using this app gives it a potential opportunity to overthrow Twitter.
Will we see this happen, I don’t know but keeping up with this is going to be interesting.
