“Habits”.

The word that is quite familiar to those in the world of productivity.

Habits can be considered as one of the building blocks to success.

The sprouting of benefits extracted from these habits is often conducted in the shadows.

However, when brought into the light, people can observe them as natural talents or abilities.

However, the steps involved and conducted behind the scene can be overlooked.

Seeming like an action that is unattainable for a common person to reach.

Among the plethora of factors contributing to success, one that we are responsible for is our actions.

Having an understanding of the purpose of building these habits other than for success, can give us a deep appreciation for the wider implications of our actions.

With that said, let’s have a deep dive into the 5 reasons for building habits.

No.1 - It becomes your Character

Consider these 2 situations:

Person A, let’s call him Jeff. He wakes up every day at 7:00 am to get ready before work at 9:00 am.

Person B, Let’s call them James. He has work at 9:00 am and sets an alarm but usually sleeps through them until the very last moment to not get late for work.

From this example, what character would both of these people form from this action, it if was continued for over a year?

Jeff(Person A): Showing determination, self-discipline, personal accountability and resilience to get up at that same time despite occasions where it may have been difficult.

James (person B); Shows a lack of time management, self-discipline and accountability despite occasion where he knows he has to wake up earlier.

The simple act of waking up can test and challenge the actions we make which can influence our character.

This doesn’t mean someone who lacks self-accountability can never change.

One of the steps towards change is taking action.

Whether that be changing your habits or creating a system to organize your life.

Implementing habits in your life that align with your goals, values and aspirations is a positive approach to cultivating traits that you desire to have in your life.

No.2 - Creating A Standard

Spending your time intentionally occupying yourself with habits can show initiative and proactivity in taking advantage of time.

Having pockets of time that are spent productively whether that be 15–30 minutes can compound over time that will benefit you.

If you were to observe people waiting for a bus, on the train or a long journey. You might see many people glued to their phones on a 15 to 20-minute journey.

Many of us can fall into that trap that there is not enough time to get started for any habit your are planning. But know that small actions continued over a large period of time can be like a small rock to a mountain.

The baseline for our habits might be at a low standard but know that we can consistently refine and modified this because

  1. We are learning more about what works for us
  2. Having paradigms shifts that change our perspective such as activities that can be outsourced to save time (such as using AI)

This can ultimately benefit us because we are slowly pushing the bar of our standard.

No.3 - Goal Setting

Goals are created by us to achieve a particular outcome or a result.

It can usually be a goal, that we haven’t achieved before or a goal that we want to be consistent with again.

Whether that be reading a book once a week, not going on social media for 1 month or exercising daily.

By committing with these goals and seeing them till the end shows your responsibility for your actions.

Especially in a technology-driven world, where instant gratification can be easy to fall into.

Being determined and patient with these long-term goals can be a useful skill to translate into goals that no one has tread before.

Whether that be Solar-Powered High-Speed Rail or an organic hair product.

It all starts from within.

No.4 - One of the Best Investment

One of the ways we can serve the people, help others and our families — If we first help ourselves.

Take the example, if your hands are tied behind your back and one of your friends needs a hand with their cooking.

You have to help yourself before you can help them.

Therefore investing in your personal development improves your skills, knowledge, experiences and thinking. You can then use that to help others.

You can make a beneficial impact on those who don’t have knowledge or experience in an area.

It’s like a situation, where you have a leak in your house and the plumbers you have called haven’t been able to resolve the issue.

However, the next time you can someone who has a lot of experience can resolve the issue in 5 minutes.

The fact that that experienced plumber was able to fix it in 5 minutes shows that:

Not only are you paying for the service but also the knowledge and experience.

Starting early by acquiring knowledge that can prepare us for the future to help others.

No.5 - Not having Regrets

The identification of bad habits that we accumulate whether that be during our youth or at times of naivety.

When we begin to switch our bad habits into good habits, it can begin to open up times that we didn’t know we had.

Such as spending time up wake late, watching too many TV-Shows, going on social media or procrastinating.

The availability of free time to you is a huge responsibility.

By spending our time with habits rather than not wasting it can make us not have regret in wasting time and life away.

That’s all for me today, but remember that action cultivates routine forming habits contributing to who we are today. make the changes today for the future you.
